Systeme.io vs MailerLite: funnel builder or email tool?
Both have generous free plans. One is a funnel builder that sends email; the other is an email tool that builds pages. Here is how to tell which one you need.

Systeme.io and MailerLite are two of the most popular free starting points for creators and small businesses. Both let you collect email subscribers, send newsletters and automations, build landing pages and sell a digital product. So people often ask which one to start with.
The honest answer depends on what your business runs on. If you sell through a funnel (a lead magnet, a sales page, an upsell and a course or coaching offer), Systeme.io is built for that and its free plan is much larger. If your business runs on a newsletter and you mainly need great email design, testing and reporting, MailerLite is the more specialized email tool. All figures below come from each vendor's own pricing page, checked November 2, 2026.

Two limits stand out. Systeme.io's free plan holds eight times as many contacts and has no monthly email cap. MailerLite's free plan is stricter, and its pricing FAQ says that when a free account passes 250 active subscribers, sending is locked (campaigns and automations) until you upgrade or remove subscribers.
On the other side, Systeme.io's free plan allows only 1 automation rule and 1 email campaign, per its FAQ, and has a $10,000 lifetime sales limit, after which payment pages stop taking sales until you upgrade (help center).
Paid plans compared
| Systeme.io | MailerLite | |
|---|---|---|
| First paid plan | Startup: $17/month, 5,000 contacts | Comfort: "starting $12/month" |
| Middle | Webinar: $47/month, 10,000 contacts | Power: "starting $25/month" |
| Top | Unlimited: $97/month, unlimited contacts | Enterprise: custom, for 200K+ subscribers |
| How price grows | Fixed plans by contact limit | Price rises with subscriber count |
| Annual discount | "2 months free" | Save 10% billed yearly |
MailerLite prices its paid plans by subscriber tier, so "starting at" means the smallest list size; a bigger list costs more. Its FAQ says paid accounts are moved up to the next subscriber tier automatically when the list grows, and that Comfort's monthly email allowance is 10 times the top of your subscriber tier, while Power has unlimited monthly emails under a fair use policy (MailerLite pricing).
Systeme.io's paid plans are flat: you pay the plan price for anything up to its contact limit, with unlimited email on every plan (pricing). For a growing list, that is easy to budget.
What each one is built for
Systeme.io is a funnel and online business platform. Its features page lists sales funnels with A/B split tests, one-click upsells, order bumps and countdown timers, plus email marketing, automations, online courses, a blog, a booking calendar and an affiliate program manager, with most features on every plan and the limits changing by plan (features). The point is that the page, the checkout, the email follow-up and the course all live in one account.
MailerLite is an email marketing platform first. Its pricing page leads with campaigns, automations, signup forms and pop-ups, newsletter templates, segmentation, email A/B and multivariate testing, and detailed reports, and it also offers websites, landing pages, and selling digital products, bookings and paid newsletter subscriptions (MailerLite pricing). The newsletter is the center of gravity.
Building a sales funnel on each
Say you want a classic funnel: free guide, then a $27 offer with an order bump, then a course.
On Systeme.io, that is one funnel with an opt-in page, a sales page with an order bump, a checkout, a one-click upsell and a thank-you page, with an automation that tags the buyer, starts an email sequence and enrolls them in the course. All of it fits on the free plan, within its limits: 3 funnels, 1 course and 1 automation rule. Our tripwire funnel guide walks through exactly this build.
On MailerLite, you can build the opt-in landing page, deliver the guide by email and sell a digital product. But MailerLite's pricing page does not list one-click upsells, order bumps or multi-step sales funnels, so the upsell path would need another tool. That is the core difference: MailerLite sells a product; Systeme.io sells through a sequence of steps.
Email features
If email is your main channel, MailerLite has more email-specific tools on its paid plans: three editors (drag and drop, a simple editor and custom HTML, all on Free too), plus, on paid plans, dynamic content, multivariate testing, auto-resend, a preference center and an unsubscribe page builder are all listed on its pricing page.
Systeme.io covers the essentials (broadcast newsletters, sequences, tags and automation rules) with unlimited sends on every plan. For most creators selling through funnels, that is enough. For a newsletter-first business that tests every subject line, MailerLite's toolkit is deeper.
Cost at different list sizes
Simple list-price arithmetic before taxes and processor fees:
- Under 250 subscribers: both are $0.
- 251 to 2,000: Systeme.io stays free. MailerLite needs a paid plan once you pass 250 active subscribers.
- 2,001 to 5,000: Systeme.io Startup at $17 a month. MailerLite's price depends on your exact subscriber tier; check its calculator on the pricing page.
- Over 10,000: Systeme.io Unlimited at $97 a month covers unlimited contacts. MailerLite scales by tier.
Because MailerLite's tiered prices change with list size, we do not publish a figure for each tier; use its calculator with your real subscriber count.
Can you use both?
Yes, and some businesses do: Systeme.io for funnels, checkout and courses, MailerLite for a separate newsletter audience. It works, but you pay for two tools, keep two lists in sync and risk emailing the same person twice. If you are just starting, pick the one that matches how you sell and add the second tool only when you hit a real limit.
Moving a MailerLite list to Systeme.io
If you started on MailerLite and now want funnels and checkout, the move is manageable if you take it in order:
- Export only active subscribers, with their groups or tags, so you do not carry unsubscribed or bounced contacts into the new account.
- Keep your consent records. Note where and when people signed up, so you can show permission if anyone asks.
- Recreate tags first, then import contacts with the matching tag, so your automations can target the right people from day one.
- Rebuild your welcome sequence before you send any broadcast from the new account. New subscribers should get the same first emails they would have received before.
- Warm up gently. Send your first few broadcasts to your most engaged readers, then widen to the full list over a couple of weeks.
- Point your signup forms at the new opt-in page, and keep the old account open until a full month passes without problems.
Systeme.io lists free migration among the perks on its pricing page, so ask its support team before you rebuild a large account by hand. Going the other way, from Systeme.io to MailerLite, follows the same steps in reverse, but you will also need somewhere else to host your sales pages, checkout and course.
Which should you choose?
Choose Systeme.io if:
- You sell courses, coaching, digital products or affiliate offers through a funnel.
- You want upsells, order bumps and checkout in the same account as your email.
- You want to grow past 250 subscribers without paying yet.
Choose MailerLite if:
- Your business is the newsletter, and design, testing and reporting matter most.
- You sell simple digital products, bookings or paid subscriptions without a multi-step funnel.
- You are happy to pay once you pass 250 subscribers.

MailerLite's pricing FAQ says sending is locked for campaigns and automations until you upgrade to a paid plan or remove active subscribers.

No. Systeme.io lists unlimited email sends on every plan, including Free. Its plan limits are on contacts, funnels, courses and automation rules.
Which is better for a beginner?
